Easy Apple Dessert to Make With Kids
This old-fashioned Apple Crisp Recipe was passed down to me from my mom. Apple Crisp is an easy way to achieve the taste of an apple pie without all of the work involved in making and rolling out a crust. It's the perfect "go-to" recipe for potlucks. Easy to make and a hit with everyone! Come on in and I'll share my recipe with you…
Apple Crisp Recipe – the best!
After one of our annual fall apple picking outings, I found myself with over 20 pounds of apples. Give four kids each a bag to fill, they will most definitely fill it. When I asked what everyone wanted me to bake with the apples, my husband's special request was Apple Crisp.
It's such an easy, and delicious recipe. The hardest part of this apple crisp recipe is peeling all of the apples. Luckily, we have one of those apple peelers that you attach to the counter and the kids love to use it. It's a great invention. It even cores the apples for you. I really recommend one for any apple recipe. It's a lifesaver.
What are good apples for Apple Crisp?
Tart apples are always a great flavor for baking – like Granny Smith, Melrose, Jonagolds, Honeycrisp, Rome Beauty, Braeburn, or Cortland
Granny Smith – tangy and tart. The favorite for baking pies
Melrose – a tart taste and usually available in fall
Jonagolds – A combination of Jonathon and Golden Delicious with a tart and sweet flavor
Honeycrisp – Crisp just like the name says and will hold its' texture while baking
Rome Beauty – Tart and Sweet and will hold up while baking
Braeburn – A firm apple with a spicy-sweet flavor
Cortland – a little bit of tartness and holds its' white flesh color
What is the difference between apple crisp and apple crumb?
- apple crisp has a crispy topping that usually includes oatmeal and reminds me of a crumble topping or crisp topping
- apple crumb usually has more of a streusel topping
Does Apple Crisp Need to be refrigerated?
- Apple crisp is similar to apple pie. It does not need to be refrigerated but will last longer if covered and refrigerated
How long will Apple Crisp Last?
- At room temperature, the apple crisp should last about 2 days. In the refrigerator, you can add 2 more days.
Do I need to use lemon juice to preserve the color of the apples?
No, it is not necessary to use lemon juice in this recipe. The preparation goes rarely quickly, so the apples will have little time to turn brown. Once the apples are baked with other ingredients – most of which are brown, you won't even notice browning on the apple. Another reason to hold off on using lemon juice is the browning process is actually the apple getting softer or more tender and is somewhat preparing for baking.
What Are Some Good Toppings for Apple Crisp?
Good apple crisp toppings include – a sprinkle of cinnamon, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and/or whipped topping, a sprinkle of pecans, or walnuts for an extra special and delicious dessert
